Shand Shelton

An Architectural Practice which specialises in the design, documentation and construction of live performance creative spaces throughout New Zealand and in Australia.

In 1996 Roger Shand formed Shand Shelton as the first ‘design driven’ Project Management Company in New Zealand, after successfully developing and implementing Wellington’s Civic Centre. Phil Conroy soon joined the company complimenting Roger’s skills by providing financial rigour with construction bias and further developing the model for the effective management of complex projects.

While performance venues are appreciated by everyone, their design, construction and/or restoration is a job for a specialist. These are arguably one of the most complex buildings to design. Principals Roger and Phil bring a unique blend of skills and experience to their ‘live performance’ projects, having managed these venues in the past, they understand how these venues operate and are built. They are a multi-faceted process involving at the heart the audience-actor relationship, theatre geometry, maximising the number of seats, sight lines, acoustics, air quality, crowd circulation and production imperatives to ensure economic viability.

Currently No other New Zealand Architectural practice offers this level of service and understanding of live performance venues.

Shand Shelton is a Registered Architectural Practice with the New Zealand Institute of Architects, and the New Zealand Institute of Quantity Surveyors. In addition Shand Shelton is a member of Entertainment Technology New Zealand (ETNZ)

ROGER SHAND FNZIA, B.Arch. (Ak)

Roger, a Fellow of the NZIA, brings a unique combination of design, cost and construction experience to every project. Qualified in Architecture and trained in Quantity Surveying, he has significant experience in the development of a wide range of building facilities particularly in the public domain. As Wellington’s City Architect in the years when Wellington experienced a cultural and design renaissance, Roger initiated and as Development Director, led and the development and construction of Wellington’s Civic Centre, combining award winning entertainment and cultural facilities based around existing heritage buildings, all linked by a dynamic open space.

Roger admits he is driven by the design challenge, obligations and opportunities ever present in heritage and performance architecture, particularly when it is in the public domain. Roger not only designs and oversees the construction of creative spaces – he has also managed them. As he did when the owners of Melbourne’s iconic Her Majesty’s Theatre found themselves without the day-to-day operational skills they needed once their theatre had been fully redeveloped and refurbished by Shand Shelton. So they asked Roger to do the job.
